The last things I did not get to do were laundry, and picking up exploded LARP gear. Since KR is this weekend coming up, both will be happening before the end of the week.

Before they were done, I wound up moving from my apartment in Glenside, up to Valhalla, NY. The kegs moved with me, secure in the back of various cars (Unlike last time... which is a different story).
They stayed under a table in Valhalla for 3 years, doing nothing but aging and collecting dust, much to the chagrin of
Then, I moved again, this time to my own house. Once again, the kegs moved with me, still aging quietly, still under a table.
For the first time in a very long while, I have a planned free weekend. So I'm bottling. The scary thing is, it's been FIVE YEARS since I opened these jugs to see what was inside.
They could have been good. they could have been vinegar. They could have been a lot, lot worse.
I am happy to say that they are all still viable. One (the Cider) is amazing, the other two are not bad, but a bit too... strong? for my liking. How others react may determine what I do with them.
Still, all in all, a good show. Now, to bottle the suckers. A quick trip to Cornell's Brew Store in Eastchester, and I'll be good to go.
Anyone want some mead?
In no particular order, my plans for the weekend include: Sleeping in, spring cleaning of bulk trash, packing up all my LARP crap that has re-asploded all over my room, picking up all my LARP crap that has re-asploded all over my workroom, straightening up the "basement" in anticipation of getting the last dregs of electrical work done on the house (see also: bulk trash), sitting down to watch some Blu-Rays I got for by Birfday, probably at least one load of laundry, hitting the local Home Brew & Hardware store for random supplies, bottling the 3 casks of mead I've had sitting under a desk for 5+ years, unloading 40 years worth of "Road & Track" magazine from the back of my car (pending transport to Saratoga for the car museum), picking up the yard trash I can see from my bathroom window, figuring out where to hang several swords (even if I don't hang them yet), and sleeping in some more.
Not quite a "relaxing, do-nothing" weekend, but it'll make me feel good and whole when shit gets done that I've been meaning to do for ages. Landscaping has been done around the house, and a handyman is coming to knock out the checklist of other minor issues that have not been taken care of since we moved in - progress is being made on the house again.
The next set of weekends after this will be a blur of activity, as Knight Realms has 3 events in 5 weeks. One of them is the 10th Anniversary game, which promises to be interesting, the other two will be fun as I finally get to pull out all the toys I have been saving for nice weather / post Christmas bonus.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon squee. Whoo!
And to answer
(All of them are RPG or LARP characters, so I'll get that out of the way right now!)
Jiekarn
Jiekarn is an old tabletop PC from my years in Schenectady, which was 96 to 98. The GM, Jason Behnke, was also a painter that did work on CCGs and fantasy / gaming books. At the time I moved up, Jay was literally in the "Starving Artist" mode, and as a result, he painted pictures as birthday gifts for people. The painting of Jiekarn was one of the most splendid birthday gifts I've ever received, and still hangs on my wall. The icon is a pale comparison, but it still captures the spirit of the art - a wandering ranger with a bear skin cloak, traverinsg the hills of his home land. The concept is heavily inspired by the Riders of Rohan from Lord of the Rings, which is why I have a bunch of Rohan stuff on my wish list. ;-) (There is a part of me that can be very woodsy and nature-loving, hidden under the tech geek. Yes, I was a Boy Scout, although I only made it to Star before moving on.)
Sadly, I can't find a full pic of the painting online, but Jay's art can be seen at: http://behnkestudio.deviantart.com/gall
Garrun
Whoo, boy... how do I explain this one? Garrun started out as a challenge. There was a discussion at a LARP how the average player would change a minor article of clothing and claim to be a new PC. "See? This one has a hat!" The resultant logic is that you should not be able to tell who is under the costume, if it's done right. And thus, Garrun came about. The outfit consists mostly of a panther prosthetic from Lyonshel Studios, and a dreadlock wig. A full suit of leather armor occasionally gets into the picture. He's a berserker and feral anamal, a vent for all my frustraion when I play him. With close friends, he's also been chibi-fied into a cute kitty that can be scritched and played with as an inside joke. I usually post using this icon when something rage-y is the subject, or other single-minded though processes come up (including loyalty - he's got a very deep streak once you earn his trust).

Heiwa
Togashi Hiewa is my original Knight Realms character, a monk loosely patterned off the L5R Tattooed Monks. He's the stereotypical zen martial artist, which a penchant for herbal medicine and brewing teas. The schtick for him in this case is that he has dragon's blood in his veins, allowing him to tap mystical powers via his tattoos. (His tea is still pretty damn powerful, though.) I usually post as him when it's something thoughtful, zen-like, or calm.

So while talking to
It started out with the Pirates 3 soundtrack, which got me in a good Carlos mood... he's been stirred from his slumber, which has been far too long, all things considered - too much going on in my life, too many bad things happening, piling on top of me. He kinda sat up in the back of my head, brush himself off (as he is wont to do), and said "Yo, I want OUT."
This then led to one of the old Carlos mixes, which has Blue Man Group's "Sing Along" with Dave Matthews on it. Which then led to the rest of the Complex album... which lead me to realize, Music has been missing from my life as of late.
I aim to fix that.
So, to start a meme - what song do you think of, when you think of me? Not necessarily one of my characters (although you can pick one for them, too), but teh Geoffus himself?

Still, there's always a few things that one just can't put on a list, but it's still a good idea to let people know what kind of thing you're looking for. At the risk of sounding self-important for posing about it, here goes...
- Blu-Ray discs. We have a new TV and a PS3, so we're good to go with the latest in Hi-Def. There's a lot of them already on my Amazon list, but someone may find an odd one that I missed, or Amazon doesn't carry. You can always ask the locals what's in the library or where my tastes lie, but it's usually Anime, Fantasy epics, or Martial Arts flicks. I don't mind upgrading existing DVDs to Blu-Ray if the new version is THAT much better in the new format.
- LARP gear. I have costuming, and weapons & armor already, but accessories - shoulder sling bags being the big one (I seem to go through them like potato chips - they need to hold a 3-ring binder for rules), but also room decorations, Fantasy-acceptable gadgets (lights, etc.), are always welcome. I currently play a Gypsy Rogue, a High Elf Blacksmith / Mage, and a Were-Cat Berserker who thinks he's a paladin. ;-)
- A good drinking vessel for Gideon, the above mentioned High Elf. I have a leather mug for Carlos, and a drinking horn for Garrun, but Gideon lacks a drinking thing of his own. This is an odd one because it needs to be A) Fancy enough for a High Elf, B) Sturdy enough for a Blacksmith, and C) Practical enough for a Geoffus. That last one means it will hold a good quantity of beverage, can hold cold OR hot drinks, and be easy to wash. I've seen a lot of really nice wooden and pewter mugs at faires, but none of them quite leapt out at me.
- PS3 Multi-Player games. I like games that everyone can have fun with at once - I'm not into RPGs or such. Something I can pop in quick, get 4 people to play, and put down when needed are my favorites. We have 4 controllers, so that isn't an issue.

The Cosplay:

The wig needs some more work, and the makeup a bit heavier (It never seems to cover well in photos). I had whiteout contact lenses, but the seal on one of them broke, sealing it IN the bottle while my leatherman was out on loan to a Con Guest (a worthwhile cause), so no creepy white eyes this time.
I consider this a beta run - I'll have to do a "full release" some time at another convention, probably DEXCON if I can.
The game in question is Knight Realms, which is a dark / fantasy game with Gothic overtones, and a PG-13 rating.
Obviously, the manacles need to be safe for both the wearer and the people around him / her (We have a rule that a weapon / prop has to be safe in the hands of the lowest common denominator, since anyone might accidentally pick up your prop and try to use it). However, they should look somewhat realistic. All of the safer ones I have seen are "Love Cuffs" that are pink, fuzzy, leopard fur, etc. - not quite the kind you'd use to trap someone in the Chains of Justice or bind them down for an Exorcism.
I figure someone in this crowd might know a place that sells manacles that are safe for the average wearer, while also looking acceptable as a prop for a medieval LARP.
The following pretty much sums it up for me:

Don't need to fill anything out, no forms, no sign-ups, just click on the link. It'll make my little virtual city grow. :-)
(You can even click on it once a day if you want! I just need Transport more than anything right now...)
Desks were moved. Boxes were broken down. Foam bagged up, and trash taken out. Paperwork was done, and networks rewired.
I feel SO much happier now. >^_^<
There's still a lot to do - I have dimmable CFBs on order to replace the burned out bulbs in the downstairs rec-room (3 out off 4... at the same time?!?), and a new medicine cabinet on the way to replace the one that decided to fall off the wall in the upstairs bathroom, but they will be done when they actually come in.
I've also got all my laundry done - I even did a KR load, even though I was not at KR (all the fleeces & silks I got for the Holidays, woo!). Now I plan on actually folding the non-work stuff and putting it away, which should help even more.
I might even get to hanging the last of the pictures / certificates I still have un-hung since I moved in last year...
So I am home with a fleece hoodie on, a mug of hot tea, and sitting at my computer working on the KR site and generally doing a bunch of tedious work that should have been done before, but I didn't have the time to commit to it. It feel nice and relaxing to be able to get all this done and see progress on the site, and actually improve it, especially after all the issues it's been having.
( Behind the cut - reasons I love my birdie! )
I've called the Doc to get some sort of antibiotic to be safe - my cough is producing a green goop that looks none too pleasant. Hopefully he'll actually call me back today. If not, another day's rest should help before going back in on Monday.
Update: Have azithromycin, the "Take for five days, works for 10" antibiotic now. That should help.

Resources for choosing a good TV are easy to find. I'm not too worried about that... it's the Receiver I need help with. ConsumerReports.org's last review was November 2006, and is now a year out of date. I looked at Amazon and walked past a BestBuy just to take a peek, but both were lacking in the technical details I need.
What I need is a Receiver unit with the following specifications:
- At LEAST 3 HDMI inputs, and possibly more for down the line if we get another device to hook up.
- One set of inputs for a Wii (Which does not do HDMI, but can do S-Video and I think Component as well - not sure)
- HDMI out (for the TV)
- Optional: 5-speaker out for the current Bose cube setup I have. While I could also buy new speakers, I'd rather not upgrade the whole AV system in one shot if I can help it. If not, then recommend a good set of speakers to go with the Receiver. ;-)
If anyone who is knowledgeable about such things can recommend brand names & models, I would be eternally graceful. (Links to specs would make me even happier, so I could oogle them and know what I'm looking at.)
(
I came across a site full of nothing but sexual and alcohol based innuendo on what are probably cheap B&W shirts, and an Underwear section devoted to female undergarments that I can't see anyone buying except as a gag gift for their S.O.
But then, amongst the piles of crap, this little gem crossed my screen:

At least they have ONE redeeming product.

Your dominant hues are cyan and green. Although you definately strive to be logical you care about people and know there's a time and place for thinking emotionally. Your head rules most things but your heart rules others, and getting them to meet in the middle takes a lot of your energy some days. Your saturation level is medium - You're not the most decisive go-getter, but you can get a job done when it's required of you. You probably don't think the world can change for you and don't want to spend too much effort trying to force it. Your outlook on life is brighter than most people's. You like the idea of influencing things for the better and find hope in situations where others might give up. You're not exactly a bouncy sunshine but things in your world generally look up. |
As a kid, I used to watch my dad build model trains, and try to help or offer helpful advice. ( "But dad, the train station downtown is covered in graffiti, why isn't yours?"). He quickly got me my own model kits to keep me occupied.
I grew up on some of the staples - jets, mostly, with some Star Wars kits, a car or two, and a lovely line of Tamya tank kits, one of which is still on display at Abington Game & Hobby, I think. When I learned to play D&D, I picked up lead minis to paint, and then got involved in wargaming as well.
This continued all through college, and on into Schenectady (96 - 98), and a wee bit into the house in Philly before the fire where I lost all my gaming stuff. I then put it on hold, and picked back up for a while in Glenside while I was running Clan War, but it eventually petered off when I moved up to White Plains due to a lack of space and time to set up a proper painting area, and actually do it. (The same goes for my sewing, which is actually far more practical, and possibly profitable.)
Today, after what's been a hellish few weeks at work, my boss wanders over and hands me an action figure of Sherlock Holmes. "His magnifying glass broke - do you have super glue?" I responded we have 5-Miunute Epoxy on hand, but it wouldn't work for that instance - not enough surface area, and impossible to clamp for the 5 minutes. So I'll be picking up super glue to fix Mr. Holmes’s token icon, as well as permanently affixing his hat to his head.
Looking at the bits on my desk suddenly gave me the longing for building something again. I have several un-built kits tucked away in the storage room, including a Klingon Bird of Prey, at least 4 B5 Starfuries (one for each paint scheme offered), a fully detailed Yamato, two crappy SFD-1 kits from the American-made Monogram/Revell “Robotech” line, and some others. But the real prize is the vinyl kit of Tom Baker as Doctor Who, still needing a trim for flash, assembly, and painting. The fact that I saw a Sophitia (from Soul Calibur) resin kit for sale as well recently didn't help. (I'll admit she's cute, but I'd much rather have a Siegfried kit... I never did like the idea of building what is essentially a cheesecake girl model kit. While Sophy is not as bad as most anime girl model kits, Ziggy in the new SC IV armor would just be kickass.)
Perhaps, some day, I'll take the time off from work just to burn vacation time and unwind at home, putting a few of them together. It would be good for the soul, methinks.
